Cerca del 50%de lasmercancíasmovidas por Alicante fueron plátanos y frutos secos. El Puerto de Alicante mantiene una relación muy estrecha de este tipo de mercancías con el norte de África, Canarias y Baleares, zonas que son favorecidas para conectarse con el resto de Europa, por su terminal ferroviaria, recientemente ampliada para acoger trenes de mayor capacidad, y que permiten el transporte de mercancía encontenedor refrigerado, de forma sostenible, alternativaal transporte por carretera.
