En este sentido, el informe menciona algunos ejemplos como el incremento en el número de barcos de nueva construcción que podrán utilizar fuentes de propulsión de cero emisiones cuando estén disponibles y el de las inversiones destinadas a equipar los buques para que se conecten a la red eléctrica. De hecho, apunta el informe, más del 15% de los barcos que entrarán en servicio en los próximos cinco años podrá incorporar células y baterías de combustible y el 85%de los nuevos buques de cruceros (hasta 2028) podrá conectarse a la red eléctrica, permitiendo el apagado de motores cuando estén atracados, lo que supondrá una reducción significativa de las emisiones. “La innovación y la ingeniería están en el corazón de la visión de la industria para llegar a cero emisiones netas de carbono. La industria continúa abriendo el camino a través de la inversión de miles de millones en la adopción de nuevas tecnologías, la aceleración del desarrollo de combustibles marinos sostenibles -concretamente motores aptos para utilizar los mismos- y el equipamiento de la flota actual y de los nuevos barcos con sistemas que permitan la conexión a la red eléctrica a tierra”, afirmó la presidenta y CEO de CLIA, Kelly Craighead, en la presentación del informe. El informe tambiénponedemanifiestoque, para conseguir los objetivos de descarbonización del transporte marítimo será esencial la transición hacia combustibles marinos sostenibles (biocombustibles y combustibles sintéticos, metanol, amoniaco e hidrógeno) y subraya la necesidad urgente de que los gobiernos apoyen la investigación para agilizar el desarrollo de estos combustibles de manera que sean seguros, viables y estén disponibles para su utilización generalizada. SUSTAINABLE MARINE FUELS: A PRESSING NEED To reach net-zero carbon emissions globally by 2050, cruise lines are working on several strategic lines of action, which are analyzed in CLIA’s Environmental Practices and Technologies 2022 report. In this sense, the report mentions some examples such as the increase in the number of newly built ships that will be able to use zero-emission propulsion sources when they become available, and the investments made to outfit ships so that they can connect to the grid.
