Puertos - Ports 69 Bilbao is a flexible, agile port that is in close contact with its customers. It provides numerous shipping services, especially to northern Europe and the United Kingdom, connecting it to more than 800 ports all over the world. It has modern infrastructures for all types of traffic, catering for large ships with draughts of up to 30 metres, and it is very well connected by road and rail which streamlines intermodal transport. The Port Authority of Bilbao has a partnership with Mercabilbao, the largest distribution centre for perishable foodstuffs in the north of the Iberian Peninsula and the south of France. FACTS AND FIGURES The Port of Bilbao handles over 100,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables a year, of which approximately 90% are exports. The Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom are its major markets, making the Port of Bilbao the leading Spanish port for these countries. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The port’s container terminal has 540 connections for reefer containers and automated access that speeds up and simplifies all operations, including those of fresh produce carriers. The Port has Ro-ro and multipurpose terminals; cold storage facilities for perishable goods, freezer stores (-25ºC) and cool stores; and a modern Border Inspection Post, with 16 gates operating 24 hours a day and with all types of authorisations, facilitating goods transit operations. It has implemented flexible, paperless processes and services through electronic applications to facilitate operations, provide information about goods traceability and strengthen facility access security. In addition, the Port of Bilbao is working on projects to reduce its carbon footprint, become a sustainable leader and a Green Port. One of the latest initiatives is BilbOPS, a project to supply electricity to berthed ships, preventing the emission of greenhouse gases, vibrations, and noise, which will be operational in 2025. In addition, last year, a historic stevedoring agreement was signed in this port, guaranteeing the operational stability of the port for the next six years. PORT OF BILBAO
