FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 63 The Port of Algeciras launches its trading year at Fruit Logistica Berlin where it will be showing the fruit and vegetable sector the best logistics solutions for agricultural imports and exports during the three days of the fair. This is its seventh year registering a throughput of more than 100 million tonnes of cargo. FACTS AND FIGURES Algeciras is the leading Spanish port for fruit and vegetable traffic with a 47%market share (5.7 million tonnes in 2021). Reefer container traffic closed 2021 with a 16% growth in full reefer import-export containers and, in 2022, the cumulative figure up to November was 57,000 full TEUs. Reefer export throughput rose by 12.20% up to November, mainly to Canada, the United States, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, South Korea, and Malaysia. Frozen meat, citrus fruit, stone fruit, onions, and garlic were the most popular goods shipped. Andalusia exports seven times more fruit and vegetables than it buys from the world, mainly peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, gherkins, dates, figs, pineapples, avocados, guavas, mangoes, raspberries, courgettes, melons, watermelons and papayas, citrus fruit, and blueberries, which are increasingly bound for Canada and the USA. SERVICES AND PROJECTS In terms of imports for distribution in Europe, the Port of Algeciras offers improved import times from producing countries such as Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Peru, thus consolidating its position as a gateway to Southern Europe for perishable goods from Latin America, especially for pineapples from Costa Rica and avocados from Peru thanks to the direct services to Moín (10 days) and Paita (19 days), respectively. Other regular line services run to New York (8 days), Colombia (9 days), Miami (10 days), Montreal (16 days), Ecuador (17 days), Port Klang (22 days), Chile (22 or 23 days) and Busan (30 days). The Straits of Gibraltar port, whose Port Community is highly specialised in reefer goods, already has a cold storage capacity of 30,300 pallets in state-of-the-art facilities, while its container terminals have 5,000 connections for reefer containers.
