TRANSPORT LOGISTIC MUNICH 2023

Las Cifras del Sector - Industry Facts and Figures 37 One in two of the 2,556 exhibitors and visitors at Transport Logistic in Munich from 9-12 May believe that the trade fair comes at a more important time than ever before. Over 2,500 shippers and service providers gave their assessment of the situation in the online survey ”Trend Index for Transport Logistic” conducted in January. Some of them are pessimistic about the future but overall, the logistics industry is in a robust position. What they all agree on is a shared concern about the pressing shortage of skilled labour and drivers in a market environment heavily influenced by inflation. The Trend Index for Transport Logistic shows that one in three companies expect an economic downturn, for which two thirds of them say they are already prepared. The logistics industry is braced for any eventuality. Around 75% of respondents fear further supply chain disruptions, although a large number of companies say they are in a position to cushion the effect of a further escalation of the war in Ukraine without economic damage. The logistics industry thus demonstrates that it can solve its own problems as well as those of others, if it is allowed to do so. LIMITED FREEDOM OF ACTION The survey shows that the biggest challenge for the logistics industry is the shortage of drivers and skilled labour. In addition, smaller companies are most affected by inflation and competitive pressure, while larger companies are most challenged by the energy crisis and raw material shortages, as well as disruption in the logistics value chain. Three quarters of respondents rated the industry’s image as positive overall and expect further improvement. At the same time, more than 40 percent of the respondents do not describe logistics as an attractive employer and complain that it is suffering from its employer image. LOGISTICS CHAINS UNDER PRESSURE In addition to the shortage of drivers and skilled labour, rising inflation is putting pressure on almost 30% of companies, a percentage that doubles in small and medium-sized firms. In companies with 1,000 or more employees, the priorities shift, with raw material and energy shortages (31%) and supply chain disruptions (26%) at the top of the list of concerns after the perennial problem of staff shortages. 75% of respondents fear further supply chain disruptions RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF A POSSIBLE RECESSION The Trend Index for Transport Logistic survey shows that the biggest challenge for the logistics industry is the shortage of drivers and skilled labour.
