FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 79 The Port of Malaga is the second closest deep-sea port to Madrid. The Noatum terminal has been handling container traffic, among other goods, since 2004. The hinterland of the Malaga terminal is connected by land and rail to the main fruit and vegetable producers. The terminal has never had to be closed due to adverse weather conditions. Moreover, there is major potential for growth in its existing facilities, despite their size. The compact size of the port ensures good customer service and rapid adaptation to customer needs, providing personalised services. FACTS AND FIGURES The number of reefer units increased by 92.2% between 2021 and 2022, from 1,034 to 1,988 units. This is a significant figure, and even more so when taking into account previous years: in 2020 there were 250 units and in 2019 only five units, which represents massive growth of over 800% in three years. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The terminal has 648 refrigerated connections and transformers which can increase capacity to 1,200 connections if necessary. The Border Inspection Post (BIP) currently has five refrigerated and nine dry inspection areas. An external company provides cold storage and a capacity of 2,800 pallets and 15 loading bays at MercaMalaga. In addition, the Port of Malaga has a direct weekly service to and from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Puerto Limon (Costa Rica) and official authorisation to weigh bananas. A team promotion and sales campaign is being carried between the terminals, port authority, shipping company, and operators to boost operations in Malaga. There is enormous potential in the surrounding area, with companies producing (and also importing) products such as avocados and mangoes. The tender and start of construction of the new Border Inspection Post is scheduled for 2023, which will increase the capacity to manage incoming and outgoing goods when it is completed, as it will have six additional refrigerated quays and four for dry goods.
