FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 77 The Port of Las Palmas is a privileged hub for goods from Africa and Latin America, as it is the largest port in the Mid Atlantic. Its geographical position on the north-south route, both to South Africa and South America, and a comprehensive range of port services, have made it a benchmark port over the centuries. FACTS AND FIGURES In 2022, the Port of Las Palmas handled an estimated total of 1,206,245 tonnes in the categories of fruit, vegetables and pulses, and frozen and refrigerated fish, with the first category accounting for the greatest volume of refrigerated goods. The Port handled 923,639 tonnes of fruit, vegetables, and pulses and around 282,606 tonnes of frozen and refrigerated fish. SERVICES AND PROJECTS In 2023, the Port of Las Palmas has recovered one of its traditional activities, the unloading of fresh fish. Through an agreement with the San Cristóbal Fishermen’s Cooperative, the installation of jetties, an unloading ramp and the new Frisu ice factory, the twenty or so small craft that make up its fleet can now dock and unload their catches at the traditional fishing quay in the Port of Las Palmas. Cold logistics in the Port of Las Palmas specialise in bulk storage. This is the case, for example, of Frioluz Coldstore, a company created in 2020 as a result of the merger of the two most important cold storage firms in the Port of Las Palmas: Frigoluz and Spanish Pelagic. This complex is built on a 14,000 square-metre plot and has 66,000 cubic metres of cold storage at the edge of the breakwater, where it primarily rents out industrial cold storage facilities, storing frozen, refrigerated and conventional goods, and carrying out their logistics. Cold logistics is booming in the Port of Las Palmas thanks to several projects such as the concession of 2,960 square metres for cold storage, both for freezing and refrigeration of all types of food products and also cold stores for fish, an ice factory for supplying fishing vessels and the rental of offices for companies working in the port or in other related activities.
