FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 91 The Port of Vigo is a versatile, natural port, which is highly specialised in high-added value general cargo (over 90%). The main types of traffic handled at the Port of Vigo are cars, fresh and frozen fish, granite, metals, cement, wood and fruit. The Port offers direct and feeder services to South America, Central and North America and the entire West African coast, strengthening the Port of Vigo’s role as an Atlantic gateway for frozen fish and fruit for Spain and Europe. FACTS AND FIGURES Fruit traffic is predominantly imported (91%, in 2021), mainly from Costa Rica, Brazil and Colombia, which account for 86% of throughput. The main types of fruit are bananas, pineapples, and melons, as well as citrus fruit from South Africa, mainly for the Portuguese market. The majority of frozen fish traffic is imports (81% of traffic in 2021) mainly from the Falklands, Namibia and Argentina. A total of 170,000 tonnes of containerised fruit traffic (around 15,000 TEUs) was recorded in 2022, alongside emerging conventional traffic that is beginning to grow significantly. In terms of other reefer traffic, frozen fish throughput was particularly significant in 2022, again exceeding 600,000 tonnes. SERVICES AND PROJECTS Its TERMAVI container terminal leads reefer traffic in the north of the country and has modern facilities for physical inspections, customs, and health formalities next to the Port. The terminal has more than 1,300 reefer connections, and its two fruit terminals, DART Vigo and Progeco Vigo Fresh Port, reflect this specialisation. Work is currently underway on the construction of the new Border Inspection Post, scheduled for 2023, which will help to streamline all health and customs management procedures. A railway siding is also being built to connect the Port of Vigo to its logistics platform, PLISAN, located just 35 kilometres from the port. PORT OF VIGO
