Puertos - Ports 87 The Port of Tarragona has shipping links with the main fruit exporting countries such as the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Colombia, and New Zealand, making it a gateway for fruit and vegetables to and from the Iberian Peninsula and southern Europe thanks to its strategic location. The Port of Tarragona fruit terminal has a total of 100 connections for reefer containers with their corresponding power outlets and cold stores just 25 metres from the quay. The fruit terminal has a 350-metre-long berth with a depth of 10 metres and provides value-added services such as picking, consolidation, quality control, labelling and RFID tracking and tracing systems. The specialist terminals at the Port of Tarragona have a surface area of 20,000 square metres with a capacity for 17,000 pallets for loading and unloading fruit and vegetables. FACTS AND FIGURES The Port of Tarragona has a throughput of more than 200,000 tonnes of this type of goods, which represents an increase of almost 50% in the last five years. Tarragona is the point of entry to the Iberian Peninsula for 90% of the kiwifruit that comes from New Zealand, which is the most popular kiwifruit consumed in Spain and Portugal. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The Port of Tarragona is currently working on a Logistics Activities Area, involving an investment of over €30 million over the next few years to develop an area of almost one million square metres ready to accommodate private investment for the provision of high added-value logistics services. In parallel, the Port is investing €15 million in the construction of a new intermodal terminal in Guadalajara-Marchamalo, just 60 km fromMadrid, directly connected to the Port’s intermodal terminal (La Boella), thus boosting the growth of general goods traffic and rail freight. The Horizon 2023 strategy promoted by the Port of Tarragona opens a new window of opportunity that will be joined by the European gauge railway to Tarragona scheduled for the end of next year.
