FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 83 The Port of Santander is a highly specialised multipurpose port, located on the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the northern and western shores of the largest bay on Spain’s northern coast. This facility has a surface area of almost 3,000,000 square metres. Its privileged location means it can cater for the needs of a wide hinterland, organised through a ”communications hub” in which motorways, railways, the port, and the airport converge. Thus, there is direct access to the motorway network from the Port. It has a sophisticated railway infrastructure which, in recent years, has transported over 15% of inbound and outbound freight by rail. It also has an international airport just 10 minutes away with several daily flights, making the Port of Santander a logistics hub which acts as a catalyst for its surrounding area. Its hinterland extends mainly to Castile and Leon, but also to Madrid and the Ebro Valley. Its excellent location facilitates the integration of the Port in the main international trade and shipping networks and makes it a magnificent platform for the import and export of goods. Trade with European Union countries represents approximately 43% of the port’s total throughput. FACTS AND FIGURES In 2021, the Port of Santander recorded its highest ever goods throughput, exceeding 6,736,000 tonnes. 2022 also ended on a high note, exceeding 6,600,000 tonnes, partly thanks to the solid upward trend in general cargo throughput. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The Port of Santander currently has 12 reefer connections operated by CLdN, which can be expanded as required, according to the transport of reefer lorries on Brittany Ferries. From April 2023, Santander will have a Boluda Group container terminal with capacity for 144 reefers equipped for fruit and vegetable produce. PORT OF SANTANDER
