FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 71 The Port of Cartagena offers an unbeatable service from its Fruit and Vegetable Terminal for general cargo and, in particular, for perishable products, as an efficient logistics hub adapted to the demands of the Spanish fruit and vegetable industry. The Port of Cartagena Fruit and Vegetable Terminal also has an additional role in the logistics chain in summer, when there is no production in Murcia, as it serves as an entry point for citrus fruit imported by companies in Murcia from the southern hemisphere, which is then dispatched throughout Europe via these firms’ distribution networks. FACTS AND FIGURES In 2022, the Port handled over 46,000 tonnes of fruit, vegetables, and pulses. Cartagena has direct shipping lines for exports and imports to and from the United Kingdom, the south of France, North Africa, and the Canary Islands, using them as an alternative to road transport. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The Fruit and Vegetable Terminal at the Port of Cartagena has modern infrastructures: a quay with a 405-metre-long berth and a depth of 11.25 metres, cranes with a capacity of between 6 and 30 tonnes and a Ro-ro berth for wheeled traffic. Refrigerated products arrive at the port as palletised goods. It has a storage capacity of 10,000 pallets in cold stores, or in reefer containers, and the terminal has 358 reefer connections. The Port Authority is considering adding new shipping lines with the Middle East to sustain the Region’s growth through innovation and by providing agile, efficient and environmentally friendly logistics solutions. The future of the Port lies in Barlomar, a Multipurpose Terminal which will be able to handle 80% of the world’s ships calling at Cartagena and will increase container capacity tenfold. In addition, work is about to begin on the new Border Inspection Post (BIP) which will increase competitiveness and respond to European requests for greater border control. The building, with an investment of over €6 million, will be built on the Santa Lucía quay with a surface area of 3,209.46 square metres on two levels. PORT OF CARTAGENA
