FRUIT LOGISTICA 2023

Puertos - Ports 65 Fruit and vegetable production is one of the main export sectors in the province of Alicante. The Vega Baja, as the province’s fruit and vegetable growing region par excellence, and the agri-food business in its hinterland, which includes the Valencian Region, Murcia, Castile-La Mancha and Madrid, make the Port of Alicante a gateway to and from North Africa, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. The port also serves as an intermodal platform for the rest of Europe, thanks to its rail connections for transporting goods in reefer containers, as a sustainable alternative to road transport. Its excellent transport links make the Port of Alicante the ideal logistics hub for fruit and vegetable and refrigerated traffic. In addition, the flexibility and speed of its customs and inspection services such as the BIP, SOIVRE and phytosanitary services guarantee premium quality and service in the logistics chain. FACTS AND FIGURES In 2021, reefer and fruit and vegetable traffic stood at 97,000 tonnes in the Port of Alicante. This increased by 1.3% in 2022 to almost 99,000 tonnes. 50% of the goods handled at Alicante were bananas and 20% were dried fruit and nuts. SERVICES AND PROJECTS The Port of Alicante has 200 reefer connections, with 24-hour monitoring, eight quays, Coldtreatment USA, rail access to the quays, direct links to the motorway network, a Border Inspection Post (BIP) with animal, foreign and plant health units, phytosanitary facilities and a SOIVRE laboratory, a multipurpose terminal, customs examination facilities with customs warehouse and cold storage facilities. The Port Authority of Alicante is currently implementing new tools (DUE and VUA Port) to operate and manage the “OneStop Shipping-Port Shop”. There is a future project for Alicante to become a pilot port for the SIMPLE platform, promoted by the State-owned Ports Body. The Port’s Sales Division ensures logistics companies and large fruit and vegetable and reefer shippers take advantage of the cold storage facilities currently available and is planning to build cold storage warehouses on public port land to set up cold storage warehouses.
