DIARIO DEL PUERTO Spain, port by port 39 GIJON INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CRUISE SHIPS The Port of Ferrol has two berthing lines for cruise ships located in the heart of the city. The first is 450 metres long and 12.5 metres deep, and the second is 230 metres long and nine metres deep. CRUISE LINES OPERATING AT THE PORT Hurtigruten, MSC Cruises, ResidentSea, TUI Cruises, Fred Olsen, Seabourn, Windstar and Silversea Cruises. MAIN DEVELOPMENTS After the Port of Ferrol recovered the cruise calls in the wake of the hiatus caused by the pandemic, the Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao has managed to secure 17 calls made by 12 ships for 2022, which will mean welcoming more than 25,000 visitors. This should reach passenger levels similar to those that had been consolidated before the pandemic. THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF THIS DESTINATION ARE... The docking takes place in the heart of the city, in Ferrol Vello, the historic heart of the city, meaning that cruise passengers can move around on foot without the need for any other means of transport. From there, they can visit the neighborhood of A Magdalena, a unique construction in the shape of a “bar of chocolate”, which aspires to become a World Heritage Site. Its streets still conserve their traditional cobblestones, which makes the tour a unique experience. In addition, entering and leaving the estuary is one of the most beautiful arrivals and departures in Galicia, with the castles of San Felipe and La Palma which, in the past, were charged with the defense of this strategic enclave, flanking each shore of the estuary. INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CRUISE SHIPS The Port of Gijon has different quays that can accommodate from the largest vessels to the smallest and most exclusive ones: the 7th berthing face of the Osa Quays, 366 meters long and with a depth of 10.20-11.80 meters; the 8th berthing face of the Osa Quays, 205.5 meters long and 12 meters deep; and the Moliner Quay, 310.8 meters long with a depth of 14 meters. Jetty II, North berthing face: 301 meters long and 7 meters deep; South berthing face, Section 1, 179.20 meters and Section 2. 181.2 meters, with a depth of 8 meters. MAIN DEVELOPMENTS The Port of Gijon successfully managed its scheduled calls in 2021, after the COVID-19 crisis in the sector. The Port and city of Gijon have been able to adapt and respond to cruise tourism by adopting health safety measures. The Port Authority has acquired new security equipment to speed up boarding operations. These measures have been accompanied by the hiring of more technical staff for radioscopy and security operations. THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF THIS DESTINATION ARE... Asturias is an open-air museum that is well known for the diversity of its landscapes, with a unique combination of sea andmountains.
