DIARIO DEL PUERTO CRUISE TRENDS - SEATRADE 2022 36 BILBAO INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CRUISE SHIPS The Port has seven dedicated passenger terminals for cruise ships, which are equipped with the latest passenger boarding and disembarking systems and can cater for the world’s largest vessels: a 1,680 metre berthing line on one quay, and 2,500 metres in total. The cruise terminals have a total surface area of over 38,000 square metres and the new MSC terminal with shore power facilities and LNG bunkering operations is expected to be brought into service in 2024. CRUISE LINES OPERATING AT THE PORT 40 cruise lines currently call at the Port of Barcelona, i.e. practically all of the cruise companies that operate in the Mediterranean. In 2022, new companies such as Ritz-Carlton and Virgin Voyages will be visiting the port. MAIN DEVELOPMENTS SHOWCASED AT SEATRADE CRUISE GLOBAL The challenge is to return to 2019 levels while following safety standards. The Port continues to promote the use of cleaner fuels and is increasing the number of LNG-powered ship calls each year. In addition, it is working on a Quay Electrification Plan that will enable cruise and cargo ships to connect to the electric grid during their calls, shutting down engines and reducing emissions. INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CRUISE SHIPS Two dedicated quays solely for cruise ships, each with their own passenger terminal, located well away from the commercial docks. One of these quays has a surface area of 6,750 square metres, and is 17 metres wide and 12 metres deep, with a berthing line of 684 metres (366 + 318). The second quay has a surface area of 25,300 square metres, a 355-metre berthing line and a depth of 12metres. CRUISE LINES OPERATINGAT THE PORT AIDA Cruises, Azamara (V. MAINDEVELOPMENTS In 2017, the Port Authority of Bilbao opened a second cruise terminal with a moveable passenger boarding bridge. The terminal is 15metres high and has a useful surface area of 3,200 square metres. The building has been designed as an airy, lightfilled glass container, with different areas for passengers and baggage. It also has different escalators for passengers entering and leaving the terminal, making transit flows easier. The building has two floors and a mezzanine floor. The hall and tourist information desk are on the ground floor, together with the check-in and baggage reception areas. It also has a large baggage reclaim area for disembarking passengers. The VIP Room and offices are on the mezzanine floor. The waiting room, passport control for boarding passengers, and disembarkation areas are all on the second floor. THEMAINATTRACTIONS OF THIS DESTINATIONARE... The cruise facilities are located in the town of Getxo, a comfortable distance from the commercial docks. Nevertheless, they are just 15 minutes from Bilbao and its airport. Some of the highlights from the wide range of excursions available include Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum, the Biscay coast, the Alava wineries with their Designation of Origin Rioja wines, San Sebastian and Hondarribia, San Juan de Luz, Biarritz, Bayonne, Burgos and Pamplona.
