COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS- FRUIT LOGISTICA 2022

DIARIO DEL PUERTO COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS - FRUIT LOGISTICA 2022 64 PORT OF VIGO The Port of Vigo’s strength in reefer traffic has been underpinned by the power of its fresh and frozen fishing industry, inwhich it is the Spanishport of reference. Themajor imports of fruit from South America, mainly bananas and pineapples, has reinforced Vigo’s position in the refrigerated and perishable foodstuffs market, bringing sustained growth. FACTS AND FIGURES In 2021, 632,007 tonnes of frozen fish (+10.88%) and 176,038 tonnes of fruit (+16.55%) were handled, with growth set to continue in 2022. Fruit traffic was predominantly imports (91% in 2021) and came mainly from Costa Rica, Brazil and Colombia, which accounted for 86% of throughput. The main fruit products were bananas, pineapples and melons, in addition to citrus fruit traffic from South Africa, mostly for the Portuguese market. The main countries of origin for frozen fish (81% of traffic in 2021) were the Falklands, Namibia and Argentina. SERVICES The Port of Vigo has excellent infrastructure and extensive cold storage and deep-freezing facilities, thanks to the fact that the main fishing industry multinationals are located in its hinterland. This potential is reflected in the specialisation of its container terminal, with more than 1,300 reefer connections, and two fruit terminals, DART Vigo and Progeco Vigo Fresh Port, in addition to TERMAVI, with its modern facilities including phytosanitary inspection and agile, efficient goods handling. The Port also has good rail, motorway and road connections. Vigo offers direct maritime and feeder services to and from South, Central and North America and the West African coast, reinforcing the Port’s role as an Atlantic gateway for frozen fish and fruit for Spain and Central and Northern Europe. The Port’s planned projects include the construction of a new Border Inspection Post (BIP), with a larger surface area, a greater number of loading and unloading areas and more cold storage facilities.
