Tarragona’s docks have shipping connections with the main fruit exporting countries such as the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Colombia and New Zealand. The Port also has excellent infrastructure and considerable experience in the sector. FACTS AND FIGURES Last year, the Port of Tarragona handled 204,614 tonnes of fruit and vegetables. This traffic is growing thanks to the trend towards healthier eating habits, which has been accentuated by the pandemic. Fruit and vegetable traffic in the Port remained steady in 2021, with figures very similar to those of 2020, though the increase over the last five years is close to 50%. Tarragona is the point of entry to the Peninsula for 90% of the kiwifruit from New Zealand, which is the most consumed in Spain and Portugal, a situation similar to that of tropical pineapples. SERVICES ThePort has specialised infrastructures prepared toworkwith this type of logistics, which needs to maintain the cold chain at all times so that the goods arrive in optimum conditions. In total, the Port of Tarragona’s fruit terminal has 100 connections for reefer containers with their corresponding power outlets, and its refrigerated warehouses are just 25 metres from the quay. The site has 20,000 square metres with capacity for 17,000 pallets for loading and unloading fruit and vegetables. Its facilities also have 15 cold stores with a temperature range of -1.5 ºC to +14 ºC, all very close to the customs area. With a berth length of 350 metres and a depth of 10 metres, the fruit terminal has value-added services such as picking, consolidation, quality controls, labelling and RFID tracking systems.
