COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS- FRUIT LOGISTICA 2022

DIARIO DEL PUERTO Ports 59 PORT OF LAS PALMAS The Port of Las Palmas is the preferred hub for goods from Africa and Latin America, as it is the largest port in the Mid Atlantic. Its geographical position on the northsouth route, both to South Africa and South America, and a comprehensive range of port services, have made it a port of reference over the centuries. FACTS AND FIGURES The Port of Las Palmas handled a total of 1,172,462 tonnes in 2021 between fruit, vegetables and pulses, and frozen and refrigerated fish. Throughput of the first group was 930,957 tonnes, which represents a slight decrease of 3.42% compared to 2020, though it was up 8.29% compared to 2019. Total frozen and refrigerated fish traffic was 241,505 tonnes, reflecting a growth of 11.39% and 15.76% compared to 2020 and 2019, respectively. SERVICES AND PROJECTS Cold chain logistics in the Port of Las Palmas specialises in bulk storage. This is the case, for example, of Frioluz Coldstore, a company created in 2020 from the merger of the two most important cold store facilities in the Port of Las Palmas: Frigoluz and Spanish Pelagic. This new firm has a 14,000 square metre plot and 66,000 cubic metres of refrigerated storage right next to the dock, and its main business is the rental of industrial refrigeration units, storing frozen, refrigerated and conventional cargo and providing logistics. Cold logistics in the Port of Las Palmas is growing dramatically thanks to several projects, including the concession of 2,960 squaremetres for cold storage for both freezing and refrigeration of all types of food products, cold stores for fish, an ice factory for supplying fishing vessels and the rental of offices for companies engaged in port and related activities.
