COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS- FRUIT LOGISTICA 2022

DIARIO DEL PUERTO Ports 53 PORT OF ALMERIA The Port of Almeria is ideally located in the heart of Europe’s main fruit and vegetable production area, which makes it a strategic shipping location for north-south (Europe-Africa) and east-west (Asia-Mediterranean and northern Europe) traffic. The Almeria enclave plans to create a Second-Sale Fish Centre in the Fishing Port, which will increase and improve fish trading, and provide services for the transport of fruit and vegetables to the United Kingdom and France. FACTS AND FIGURES In 2021, temperature-controlled throughput in the ports of Almeria and Carboneras totalled 5.8 million tonnes (21% more than in 2020). Almost 100,000 tonnes were fruit and vegetables (+23.7%), while 16,500 tonnes were frozen fish (+32.5%). SERVICES The Port of Almeria has logistics facilities at the Pechina and Poniente quays to accommodate any new strategic traffic that may arise, such as Ro-ro exports of fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, in the coming years, the Port will have more capacity and will be able to provide new services thanks to the extension of the Pechina Quay and its connection to the Outer Breakwater, which will enable vessels with greater draught and oil platforms to dock there. It also has outlets to supply electricity at the Ribera 2 Quay to handle refrigerated lorries and the Heavy Traffic Terminal offers parking spaces for lorries with power outlets for reefer services. There are also power outlets at the Container Terminal to supply reefer containers. The Port of Almeria has a fishing and a commercial dock. The latter has passenger, Ro-ro, general cargo, solid bulk and container terminal areas. The Port of Carboneras has two docks under concession: Endesa (currently non-operational) and Lafarge-Holcim (cement and gypsum), as well as the Public Terminal (solid and liquid bulk and general cargo).
