COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS- FRUIT LOGISTICA 2022

DIARIO DEL PUERTO Ports 51 PORT OF ALGECIRAS The excellent connectivity of the Port of Algeciras is the best asset for customers who opt for the Gibraltar Straits’ port to reach the markets faster thanks to direct lines, without transhipments, 200 docks and an outreach of 75 countries, with the best transit times in the area. One of the new developments is the Maersk start-up, driven by Renfe, of the Algeciras-Marín reefer train which serves the frozen fish industry. FACTS AND FIGURES Last year, imports of refrigerated goods recorded an increase of 20.92%. These were particularly significant in pineapples and bananas from Costa Rica, as well as avocados, mangoes, grapes and citrus fruit from the southern hemisphere during the months when they are not in season in Spain. Reefer exports grew by 1.46%, with rises in citrus fruit exports to Canada and the Middle East, and stone fruit to Brazil. SERVICES The Port of Algeciras has a first-class Border Inspection Post (BIP) authorised by the European Union to analyse all types of fresh and frozen goods of animal and vegetable origin. The Port Authority is working on its expansion to increase the number of unloading bays from 30 to 45, that is to say, adding 15 new bays for plant inspection. The Port currently has 5,000 reefer connections in both container terminals, which are monitored 24/7. In addition, state-of-the-art facilities offer value-added services for refrigerated goods, providing storage capacity inside and outside the port area for 30,000 pallets at temperatures that can range from -22 to +15ºC. The Port Authority of Algeciras offers a 30% discount on the T3 tax for refrigerated goods transiting through the Port under the import or export container regime. It also offers the necessary cold treatment required to export citrus and stone fruit to countries such as China, the United States and South Korea.
