COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS- FRUIT LOGISTICA 2022

DIARIO DEL PUERTO Ports 47 BÁRBARA CORDERO LEILA ESCRIHUELA Spanish ports see cold chain logistics as a key element of their strategy and, as such, are constantly making improvements to improve the competitiveness of their reefer services and facilities. Accordingly, the different Spanish ports are focusing their investments on upgrading their infrastructures and enlarging quays, as well as on new cold storage facilities, as is the case of the Port of Cadiz, which is investing in boosting the throughput of bulk cargo, and the Port of Seville, which is taking on the project to enlarge the Logistics Activities Area (ZAL). Another of the key factors for the sustainable development of the ports that handle reefer goods is digitalisation, which is necessary to speed up processes and services, aswell as to improve port competitiveness. A good example of this is the e-puertobilbao online platform, which is one of its differential values. In addition, Spanish ports also demonstrate their social responsibility towards the environment by applying the circular economy model, ”circular cold” or, as the Port Authority of Cartagena calls it, ”ecological cold”, which consists of taking advantage of refrigeration used in other port facilities. Spanish ports recover pre-pandemic levels of reefer traffic. Port authorities ended 2021 with a throughput of 12,113,705 tonnes of fruit, vegetables and pulses and 4,750,196 tonnes of frozen and refrigerated fish
