52 Transporte marítimo MARITIME TRANSPORTATION In addition to having infrastructure, equipment and access adapted to faci l i tate the eff icient distr ibut ion of these cargoes, ports have recently begun to play a fundamental role in the construction process of large projects, such as the construction of power plants, wind farms and publ ic works, where maritime transport is key for the transfer of specialized machinery and components. All in all, the three executives recognize that the ports still have room for improvement. For Cl iment, the great challenge lies mainly in cargo capacity, i.e. ”having open areas for operations and the correct scheduling in terms of land use and loading operations and coordination with al l the port services involved with them”. It also stresses the ”need for the adequacy of additional spaces with the appropriate characteristics for the sector”, especially for a type of cargo with little regularity, which hinders proper management of port land. Javier Méndez urges to remain compet i t ive, so ”por ts must innovate and adapt to market demands, ensur ing ef f i c i ency and operat iona l capac i ty” . For the Por t of Barcelona execut ive, there must be greater investment in high-capac i ty cranes and spec ial ized storage areas , improvements in land and rai l access to faci l itate door-todoor transport, and minimize the environmental impact of these operations through more eff icient and energy-sustainable solutions. ”It is sti l l essential to continue improving land accesses, automating processes and integrating new technologies that enable more eff icient management of these traff ics, especial ly due to the proximity to the city,” he explains. Con todo, los tres directivos reconocen que a los puertos les queda margen de mejora. Para Cl iment , el gran reto radica, principalmente, en la capacidad de carga, es decir, “contar con superficies diáfanas para las operativas y la correcta calendarización en cuanto a usos del suelo y operativas de embarque y la coordinación con todos los servicios portuarios involucrados con ellas”. Asimismo, recalca la “necesaria la adecuación de espacios adicionales con las características adecuadas para el sector”, sobre todo para un tipo de carga con poca regularidad, lo que dificulta una correcta gestión del suelo portuario.
